FAQs

  • At Tallgrass Prairie Hunts, we aim to make your experience smooth, safe, and successful. Every hunt package includes:

    • Professional guide services: Local, experienced guides who know how to put you on the birds.

    • Fully set spreads: We provide all decoys, blinds, and calling — no need to bring your own gear unless you want to.

    • Scouting & access: We secure permission and scout daily to put you in the best spots, whether that’s river, pond, or prairie.

    • Transportation to the field: Ride along with us from the meet-up point to the hunt location.

    • Field care: We’ll handle bird retrieval and basic cleaning prep in the field — you’re welcome to take birds home cleaned or whole, depending on your preference.

Not included: Guns, ammunition, licenses/stamps, personal gear (waders, weather clothing), lodging, meals, and bird processing or taxidermy (but we’re happy to recommend local options).

  • Yes — we require a minimum of 2 hunters per booking to confirm a hunt. This helps ensure a safe, efficient, and enjoyable experience for everyone. If you’re a solo hunter, let us know — we may be able to pair you with another group if available.

  • No, however, we highly recommend booking 2 or more days when possible. This gives us more flexibility to adjust for changing bird patterns and weather, and it increases your chances for a successful hunt.

  • At Tallgrass Prairie Hunts, we plan your hunt around the best times for waterfowl movement to give you the best chance at success. A normal day goes like this:

    • Early morning meet-up: We usually meet well before sunrise at a designated spot — you’ll get the exact time and location when you book.

    • Travel to the blind: We’ll transport you and your gear to the hunting spot. Decoys and blinds will already be set.

    • Setup & safety check: We get you settled in, go over the hunt plan, shooting lanes, safety reminders, and answer any last-minute questions.

    • Morning hunt: Most hunts run from first light until late morning, depending on bird movement and daily limits.

    • Midday break or end: If you limit out early, great! If not, we hunt until the action slows. For combo hunts, we may shift locations mid-morning to target geese or move from river to field.

    • Pack up & transport: We retrieve birds, pick up decoys, and transport you back to the meeting point.

    • Bird cleaning: Basic field care is included — we can help you bag birds for transport, and we’re happy to recommend local processors or taxidermists if needed.

Afternoon hunts: In some cases, we can arrange an afternoon shoot for geese or field hunts — just ask when booking!

  • To make the most of your hunt with Tallgrass Prairie Hunts, we recommend bringing:

    • Shotgun & ammo: 12- or 20-gauge recommended, with plenty of appropriate waterfowl loads (steel shot only).

    • Hunting license & stamps: Make sure you have your state license, federal duck stamp, HIP certification, and any other required permits before arrival.

    • Waders & boots: Waterproof waders or insulated boots, depending on the terrain and weather.

    • Weather-appropriate clothing: Layered, camo clothing suited for cold mornings, wet conditions, and wind — gloves, hats, and face masks help too.

    • Personal gear: Gun case, choke tubes, calls (optional), sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, water.

    • Your retriever (optional): If you’d like to bring your own trained dog, please let us know in advance.

Tip: Conditions can change fast in Kansas — always pack extra dry socks, hand warmers, and rain gear just in case.

  • Yes — hunters are welcome to bring their own well-trained retrievers on hunts with Tallgrass Prairie Hunts. Please let us know in advance if you plan to bring your dog so we can plan the setup and ensure it works well for everyone in the group.

Please note: We do not provide dogs. Your dog must be steady to shot, under control at all times, and able to retrieve in the conditions we hunt.

Liability: While we do our best to create a safe environment, Tallgrass Prairie Hunts is not responsible for any injuries, incidents, or losses involving your dog during the hunt. Bringing your dog is at your own risk.

If you have any questions about hunting with your dog, just ask — we’re happy to help you prepare!

  • Hunters are responsible for securing their own valid licenses, permits, and stamps before the hunt. This helps ensure you’re fully legal and ready to go when you arrive.

For waterfowl hunting in Kansas, you’ll typically need:

    • A valid Kansas hunting license (residents and non-residents)

    • Kansas State Waterfowl Permit

    • Federal Waterfowl Stamp

    • HIP certification (Harvest Information Program)

We’re always happy to help you figure out exactly what you need and where to get it. If you have questions, just ask — we can point you to the right links and provide reminders when you book.

  • At Tallgrass Prairie Hunts, we understand that sometimes plans change. Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

    • Full Refund: Cancellations made 7 days or more before your scheduled hunt date will receive a full refund of any deposit or payment.

    • Partial Refund: Cancellations made within 7 days of the scheduled hunt date will receive a 50% refund.

    • No-Show: If you do not show up for your hunt without notice, no refund will be issued.

We do our best to work with hunters if severe weather or unforeseen circumstances arise — if weather makes hunting unsafe or impossible, we’ll do our best to reschedule you for another available date.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact us as soon as possible so we can adjust accordingly.
